A visit with some special children

My friend, Roxana, told me about an orphanage for children with special needs. She had been going there for about year, but just recently told me about the 14 children and teens who live there. We went together for a visit. We brought pizza, juice, cookies, and apple sauce. The staff asked to save the cookies for the children who go to school, so that they would have a snack at school like the “other” kids. Certainly, we said. I brought some knitted caps that came to us from England and it was so wonderful to the joy in their faces. I also brought some playdoh sets that my mom had gotten from Ollies in the spring. Oh, how they enjoyed playing with the playdoh.

I was blessed to spend time with little R.  He’s 11 years old, but his motor functions are like that of a 3 years old and his verbal skills are like those of a 18 month old.  He has Down’s syndrome and is super sweet. He climb up into my lap and we played. His little friend, F, also 11 years old, and also with Down’s syndrome, led me by the hand to fix him some more tea and jumps up to be carried.  He also has limited verbal skills. I fell in love with these 2 little boys.

What a blessing to be able to spend time with these sweet children. Each one has their own special need, illness, etc.  They are in a good situation, but if we can bring to them some of the joys of childhood we will. Lord willing, we will be able to go back each month and spend time with these children.  And because we were so blessed with all the Christmas shoeboxes, we know we have enough for these 14 children. Praise God for this opportunity to serve those in need!

Our pictures were taken by the kids and aren’t really allowed. The two little girls whose eyes are not blacked out belong to Roxana and to another friend of ours. The one with Roxana was from this summer.
